Jose Luis Martinez M.
He starts his composition studies in the Superior School of Music in Mexico City with Roberto Medina, Georgina Derbez and electronic music with Carole Chargeron. Then he continued his composition studies in the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Gerd Kühr and Clemens Gadenstätter. He has recently concluded his Master’s Degree with Franck Bedrossian in the same institution.
He has also attended lessons and masterclasses that helped him to develop certain aspect of his musical language with Georg Friedrich Haas, Gerhard Nierhaus and Brian Ferneyhough and Alberto Posadas.
He has taken part in different interdisciplinary projects in Mexico, Austria and Norway, like El Plano Oblicuo, Hombres Necios, Invisible Drives 4 (2017) and 8 (2021), Oper der Zukunft and Festspillene I Bergen. His first Chamber Opera “Rizomas y Madrigueras” was premiered in 2018 at the Graz Opera “Studiobühne”. In 2019 he was awarded with the “Musikförderungspreis der Stadt Graz”.
He studied Philosophy in the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he specialized in the phenomenology of the silence in music. Today he continues working with the implication of the phenomenological reflection of silence and time, the integration of microtonal harmony, rhythm, extended techniques and counterpoint of musical structures, and the inference of algorithmic compositional processes and artificial intelligence models in the creative process. Additionally, in the last years he has ben working in the research of different approaches to implement Birdsong in his music.
